Nicholas C. “Nick” Copeland, 87, played centerfield with the United Negro Baseball League - Southside Daily

Virginia BeachNicholas C. CopelandNicholas C. “Nick” Copeland, our beloved son, father, husband, uncle, grandfather and friend, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016.Nicholas was born to the late Thomas Copeland and Elizabeth (Brown) Copeland in Ahoskie, N.C. Mr. Nick moved to Virginia at a very early age. Nicholas was preceded in death by his sister, Antoinette, and son, Billy.Nicholas attended Princess Anne Training Center and graduated with top honors. He completed his education and attended Hampton University for three years. Nicholas went on to have exemplary service as a pilot in the U.S. Army as a Korean War veteran. Mr. Nick was an avid baseball lover. He so loved the sport, he would catch a baseball in a paper bag! He went on to play centerfield in the United Negro Baseball League.Nicholas was a cherished employee of the Virginia Beach Public School system and finally retired after 25 years of service at Kingston Elementary School, which he loved dearly, as they did him.Leaving to cherish many memories and love is his loving wife of 47 years, Mrs. Sandra Copeland of the home, “his shining star”; daughters, Debra, Robin and Nadine; sons, Ricky Scott and Darrell Carter; seven grandchildren; as well as a host of devoted nieces, nephews, family and friends.Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory, Norfolk. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the funeral home with burial in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.Commentscomments...
